about

The Grimace project began in 2011 when my talented nephew, Mikey Reznick (son of producer Greg) showed me a cartoon figure he'd drawn of me. The moment I saw it I announced that it was the cover art for my next album. I composed the songs that year, a love story song cycle from beginning to the fun part. The next year was spent taking the songs out to the clubs to try them out and put the arrangements together. 2013 was spent recording and 2014 was mixing, mastering, releasing and and taking it to the clubs again!

The songs were inspired by and dedicated to May Mui, my beautiful and generous muse. A follow-up album called Mountain Home was planned to detail the rest of the story but never materialized. Maybe someday?

While all of the Backorders are on the album only two songs featured the full band all at once. There were many guest artists on board, several of whom were there to bolster the vocal sections: Greg and Mikey, Robin Famous and Erin Lyman. Several keyboardists were there: Eric Kampman, talented Daughter Kristie, Peter (Guitar) Johnson and me. Guitars were handled by me, Greg and Sam Douglass, who contributed the beautiful slide solo on "Leave The Light On". William Paul Kelly and Bill Bergstrom popped in to play banjo and mandolin respectively while regular drummer Jim Usher was joined by Zak Grinstead, Ned Smith and me. Bass duties were shared by Backorder Mighty Mark Stone, Jim and Norman Famous. Did I forget anyone? Probably.

So, big thanks to Mikey for planting the idea, May for inspiring the songs, The Backorders for playing them and Greg for recording, mixing and producing (with executive producer Norman looking over his shoulder) and special thanks to my friend Al, who provided the all-important spiritual guidance that everyone needs.
